The reality of consumption: Comparing self-reported and observed marginal propensity to consume
通过将调查数据与银行交易数据结合,比较了自我报告和实际边际消费倾向,发现两者无显著关联,质疑了自我报告消费数据的可靠性。
Surveys are widely used in economic analyses. This study compares the self-reported and actual marginal propensity to consume by integrating survey with bank transaction data. The estimation results reveal no significant relationship between the two measures, casting a doubt on the use of self-reported consumption measures. • I compare the self-reported and actual marginal propensity to consume. • Bank transaction data are combined with a survey. • Actual MPC to a lump-sum transfer is significantly positive at around 0.3. • The estimation results reveal no significant relationship between the two measures.
