Non-profit sports club volunteers: same, same, but different or one and the same?

Research question This study examined volunteer motives (altruistic value, personal development, community concern, and social adjustment) in non-profit sport clubs across different roles (coaches, board members, referees) and their relationship with volunteer satisfaction.Research methods Surveys were conducted. Structural equation modelling was used to test the models on equal-sized randomly drawn sub-samples (coaches: n = 996, board members: n = 1,022, and referees: n = 1,000).Results and findings The results confirmed role-based motive variations. Altruistic motives mainly drove board members. For referees, altruistic motives also played a decisive role in volunteering. Referees were motivated by the opportunity to help others and to get involved. Similar to referees, coaches were strongly influenced by community concerns. Motivation correlated significantly with satisfaction for all volunteer roles.Implications Policy implications include embracing different motivations and facilitating motivation fulfilment to enhance satisfaction and retain volunteers.
