Digital media use as social practice: Quantifying its temporal characteristics and changes across 16 years, 2003–2018

Digital media use is an essential social practice in modern life. In this study we focus on the patterns and changes of digital media use as indicators of social change. A sequence perspective is adopted to analyze the media use rhythms from 2003 to 2018, considering both whole sequence and temporal characteristics. Results show that the rhythms of predominant use have remained stable at the whole sequence level but have become diversified and fragmented at the temporal characteristic level. Furthermore, different sociodemographic groups have exhibited differentiated rhythms in recent years. The findings highlight the complexity of digital media use changes across time. Within the same period, the occurrence and direction of changes can vary among intrapersonal, interpersonal, and social group perspectives.
