Abstract

This study examines how a robust culture within a bank holding company can affect its ability to create liquidity in response to increased competition within the banking sector. My result shows that banks characterized by robust cultures create less liquidity as competition increases. Additional examinations indicate that the detrimental impact of bank culture and competition on the creation of liquidity is less pronounced among institutions with a greater ability to absorb risk. These institutions include banks that are more profitable, have greater capitalization, are larger in size, more diversified and have higher dividend payout and deposit ratios. Through a detailed analysis that provides insight into the components of liquidity creation, my research reveals that banks with a robust organizational culture experience a decrease in their capacity to generate liquidity in both their assets and off-balance sheet activities.
