Abstract

Supply chain resilience (SCR) has been accentuated as a strategic response to high-profile crises. Additive manufacturing (AM) exhibits significant potential in strengthening SCR by rapidly replenishing materials and offering elevated levels of customisation. We formulate a stylised model with these two characteristics to explore the impact of AM on SCR in a supply chain consisting of one manufacturer and one retailer. We show that AM outperforms traditional manufacturing in terms of profits and consumer surplus. Despite its benefits, we extend the analysis to explore how the upfront investment affects their strategic selection under a cost-sharing mechanism. We find that AM is more likely to be adopted if the manufacturer bears a larger proportion of the upfront investment. Moreover, other traditional approaches to SCR enhancement, including resilient efforts to digitalise supply chains and contingent sourcing, are examined and compared with AM. They collaborate to adopt AM or make resilient efforts if the effort cost coefficient is extremely high or low, but their decisions differ if it is moderate. Both of them and consumers tend toward AM if contingent sourcing's recovery ability is low; otherwise, they prefer contingent sourcing. Finally, we provide useful managerial implications according to key findings.
