Abstract

Motivated by the increasing adoption of blockchain technology in supply chain management, this study examines the impact of integrating blockchain technology on incentive structures (e.g., data sharing, compliance with standards, and collaborative efforts), as well as the resulting implications for supply chain resilience. Recognizing the rising interest in blockchain applications, we identify a critical gap in understanding how firms' cooperative and competitive dynamics serve as boundary conditions in this area. Grounded in Transaction Cost Economics and Goal Interdependence Theory, we empirically tested our hypotheses using structural equation modelling with data from 285 Chinese firms. Our results demonstrate that blockchain integration significantly strengthens incentive structures by enhancing security, reducing costs, and improving transparency. Increased cooperation among firms amplifies the positive relationship between blockchain integration and incentive structures. In contrast, competitive dynamics complicate this relationship, as privacy concerns related to transparency can diminish the benefits of integration. These findings offer crucial insights for managers seeking to leverage blockchain for enhanced supply chain resilience, highlighting the importance of considering both cooperative and competitive dynamics in this integration process.
