Regional capabilities and co-invention networks for technological diversification: evidence from Brazil
研究了巴西微区域数据,发现区域技术能力和网络结构(区域内与区域间)共同影响新技术专业化的出现,且存在非线性关系。
The literature on regional technological diversification has emphasised the role of intraregional knowledge endowments while progressively acknowledging the importance of network structures. This study contributes to this discussion by jointly examining how regional technological capabilities and network structures (both interregional and intraregional) shape the emergence of new technological specialisations within the context of a developing country. We conduct an econometric analysis employing patenting and microregional level data from Brazil, and explore non-linear relationships. Our findings suggest that the presence of capabilities applicable to new cognitively proximate technologies, along with network-related factors, foster successful diversification. However, this impact is not uniform, as the positive effects of interregional connections are positive from a certain threshold, while the benefits of internal cohesion appear to be concentrated within a specific range.
