Competition dynamics in higher education systems in East Asia

Competition drives change in our fast-paced, globally interconnected, and technology-dependent societies and higher education systems. It shapes behaviours and strategies in response to policies and mechanisms that foster both new and existing competitive environments and goals, creating a self-reinforcing cycle. Embedded in higher education, competition is expected to grow in the coming years. This special issue examines competition in East Asian higher education systems, where competitive dynamics are notably intense and deeply ingrained in individual and organizational mindsets. Understanding these behaviours and adaptations is crucial for comprehending the region's higher education landscape and offer insights for systems not yet experiencing such competitive pressures. The articles of this special issue highlight various inequalities stemming from competition and the significance of competitive assets, even for those in advantageous positions. It explores survival strategies in the face of excessive competition and the necessity for continual adaptation to meet ongoing competitive challenges.
