This new English trans la tion is from the sec ond Ger man edi tion of Das Kapital-I (1872), which is the last edi tion authored by Marx him self.The edi tors' choice for this edi tion of Capital-I makes sense.Reitter's is the first English trans la tion of the edi tion.Its Ger man source is the Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe (MEGA). 1 Generally, where the Ger man texts of the sec ond and fourth edi tions over lap, Reit ter's trans la tion is largely (thus not always) supe rior to Fowkes's 1976 trans la tion of the fourth edi tion.Translation is a dif fi cult art, and this is espe cially so for a com plex work such as Marx's Capital.It inev i ta bly involves a degree of inter pre ta tion.Most English read ers of Marx's Capital-I will have read the work in the trans la tion of its fourth edi tion by Fowkes (Marx 1976), which was based on the text in the Ger man Marx-Engels Werke (MEW). 2 To appraise Reitter's new trans la tion in com par i son with Fowkes's, one obvi ously has to restrict one self to the Ger man texts which over lap in the sec ond and fourth edi tions.Thus, for the overlapping text, I first 1.MEGA (Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe).Includes the edi tions of Marx's Capital.https: / / mega .bbaw.de/de /struktur /ii abteilung.2.
