This paper aims to contribute to the debate on how the bodies responsible for organizing sports mega-events can successfully overcome challenges during the preparation phase. It also aims to understand how initially identified legacies can be modified to enhance the viability of the events. For this purpose, the 1962 World Cup is analysed through the use of the historical method. The paper highlights the importance of aligning the work plans of sports mega-event organizations with institutional and political contexts. At the same time, it allows us to draw some lessons, such as prioritizing immaterial legacies and introducing competition among potential venues. to decentralize costs.
