Abstract

Digital Twins (DTs) are critical in advancing the development of intelligent and resilient manufacturing systems. However, general DT implementation methods often depend on high-precision simulation models, which can escalate modelling costs while constraining model modifiability and adaptability. This study introduces a modular multi-granularity simulation modelling method for manufacturing systems. The multi-granularity simulation modelling theory enables the quantitative description of detail levels and associated modelling costs through granularity analysis, thereby establishing a DT framework that accommodates different granularity requirements based on specific needs and characteristics. The modular simulation modelling approach offers a systematic methodology for partitioning manufacturing systems into modules, standardising simulation modules, performing combinatorial modelling, and constructing DTs in a modular fashion. To validate this method, we have employed a case study involving the simulation modelling of a laser cutting production system and its DT implementation process. The results indicate that the proposed method effectively reduces the cost of simulation modelling while preserving accuracy, thus fulfilling the objectives of simulation analysis and DT construction.
