Abstract

This survey article provides a practical and unique guide for the industrial application of fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers, distinguishing it from the traditional use of classical PID controllers. It reviews fundamental tuning methods for such controllers and a newly developed modified Ziegler–Nichols method for designing the fractional-order controller parameters, accompanied by an illustrative example. Additionally, the article discusses practical considerations for the analog, hybrid, and digital implementations of fractional-order controllers. Furthermore, an effective control algorithm for implementing the fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller in essential industrial automation devices, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), is introduced, with several references to its existing real-world applications. Finally, a simple test procedure for stability investigation of the control loop in the time domain is also discussed.
