Development of logistics emissions reporting − Shippers’ and logistics service providers’ perspective

• Interest in emissions data of logistics has noticeable grown in recent years. • Companies are at very different stages of the development of emissions reporting. • There are different practices in calculating and reporting emissions in logistics. • The lack of expertise and resources related to emissions issues are significant challenges. • In the future, logistics emissions data will become increasingly significant. Logistics emissions reporting can help achieve the climate and emission reduction targets set both in the EU and globally. This study examines shippers’ and logistics service providers’ current views and experiences related to the development and demand for emissions data and reporting in companies operating in Finland. Based on 17 semi-structured expert interviews, interest in logistics emissions data has noticeably grown in recent years, and this interest is also expected to grow in the future due to guiding regulations and customer requirements. However, companies are currently at very different stages of development, and reporting practices vary. The lack of expertise and resources related to emission issues in the field was identified as a significant challenge to further developing logistics emissions reporting. This study deepens knowledge and understanding of the significance and development of emissions reporting from the actors’ perspective in the logistics sector.
