Abstract

The determinants of family-centered performance (FCP), that is, the attainment of family-centered goals, such as maintaining family harmony and close links between the family and the business and gaining social status, remain under-researched in SME family firms. This oversight is problematic because understanding these antecedents is crucial for developing strategies that foster long-term non-financial success and sustainability as well as financial performance. We propose that organizational psychological capital and professionalization, coupled with entrepreneurial leadership, can enhance FCP in SME family firms. By analyzing data from 354 respondents across 118 family firms, we test and find empirical support for our predictions that organizational psychological capital will be positively linked to FCP. We also examine the reinforcing effects of entrepreneurial leadership on the links between organizational psychological capital and FCP, as well as between professionalization and FCP. Finally, we discuss the significance of these findings and their important theoretical and practical implications.
