Exploring tensions between appropriateness and consequences in digitally-induced change: empirical evidence from a public museum

The study adopts the appropriateness and consequences logics to study how digitally-induced change unfolds in public museums as examples of anchor institutions. Through a single-case study of an Italian public museum, the results highlight digitally-induced change is shaped by the coexistence of these logics, with technological, organizational, and environmental tensions. The study contributes to public sector literature on digital transformation, focusing on an under-investigated organization typology and unpacking conflicting organizational dynamics emerging during digitally-induced change. It moves forward the debate on the influence of the appropriateness and consequences logics on public institutions’ behaviour, reframing them as dynamic and generative forces.
