Ambidextrous strategies for enhancing supply chain adaptability: an exploitation-exploration (in)congruence perspective

Adopting ambidextrous learning (AL) is essential for navigating structural and long-term changes in supply chains. This study investigates how the (in)congruence of a supply chain's AL strategy – configuring exploitation and exploration – affects its adaptability. By analysing survey data consisting of 241 manufacturing firms, the empirical results reveal that AL congruence enhances supply chain adaptability (SCA) more effectively than AL incongruence. Specifically, SCA is adversely affected when supply chains pursue an AL incongruence strategy. Furthermore, competitive intensity amplifies the negative impact of AL incongruence on SCA, whereas government support attenuates its detrimental effects. This study advances the understanding of SCA and provides actionable insights for managers seeking to implement AL strategies effectively.
