Abstract

The establishment of Task Forces to find solutions to the problem of drunk drivers in California and Pennsylvania is described. The major emphasis of the work of the group in Pennsylvania has been on legislation. The group recognized the need for an illegal per se law, and the need for minimum sentencing to insure enforcement of the law. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), which has been active in the establishment of these task forces, is a voluntary organization composed of victims and concerned citizens. It's goals are to raise public awareness to the problem of drunk driving, help the victims family through the adjudication process, and to effect changes in the law. MADD is seeking laws to deter people from committing the crime and stronger enforcement of the law. MADD encourages price departments to treat drunk driving as a serious offense.
