THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES AND THEIR EFFECT ON RESOURCE ALLOCATION

The mobile phone has been the focal point for traffic safety for researches, laymen, and police. This study addresses the use of mobile phones when driving. Specifically, it explores mobile phones use and their effect on cognitive workload and attention resource allocation needed for safe driving. A secondary tasking methodology was used to evaluate the workload of the participants. That means that the participants were asked to perform a high response frequency parallel task, e.g. peripheral detection task (PDT), throughout the entire test route that was not relevant to driving. Effects of conversation type and telephone mode were compared to baseline conditions. The main findings of the study are that there is a significant effect of the task on the peripheral detection task performance but no effect of telephone modality on PDT performance. A significant effect of telephone modality was found on the dependent variable of mean speed.
