Abstract

Research has traditionally viewed user responses to technology as static and one-dimensional, overlooking the dynamic and complex nature of evaluation processes. This study bridges the gap by integrating attitude theories and temporality perspective into technology adoption research, theorising how cognitive-emotional dynamics shape evolving patterns of user acceptance and resistance. It also explores the transition pathways between these patterns, their triggers, and their associated outcomes over time. Two empirical studies using identical measures were conducted to address these aims: a cross-sectional study among university employees (n = 610) and a two-wave longitudinal study among bank employees (n1 = 400, n2 = 272). Latent profile analysis identified two ambivalent and two univalent response patterns among participants. Subsequent latent transition analysis revealed that while many users maintain their initial response patterns, a significant number transition towards a univalent pattern characterised by acceptance and nonresistance, triggered by personal interests and social context. Moreover, results demonstrated a link between these transitions and changes in outcomes such as technology use, innovation, performance, work engagement, and emotional exhaustion. These findings underscore the temporal and complex interplay of technological, personal, and social factors in shaping user evaluations, offering valuable insights for research and practice.
