Abstract

Advancements in digital technology and the growth of the gig economy have significantly increased scholars’ and practitioners’ focus on gig workers’ well-being. An interesting aspect of this focus is the enterprise–union coupling relationship (EUCR) in China, a co-governing interaction that promotes gig workers’ well-being by safeguarding their rights. This study applies conservation of resources theory to examine how the EUCR influences gig workers’ well-being, specifically through creating resource caravan passageways that cater to their basic and growth rights under different conditions of time pressures. Hypotheses were tested using data from 385 gig workers through a three-wave survey. Our findings demonstrate that the EUCR promotes gig workers’ well-being, with this influence being partially mediated by basic and growth rights. Moreover, the mediating role of basic and growth rights is moderated by time pressure. This study not only introduces a new way for gig workers to safeguard their rights and improve their well-being but also deepens the understanding of the distinctive characteristics of the EUCR in China. Additionally, this study contributes to enriching the theoretical research of labour relations in China and provides beneficial practical insights for fostering harmonious labour relationships within the gig economy.
