Abstract

Organizational citizenship behavior toward the environment (OCBE) is crucial for improving the eco-effectiveness of tourism organizations and further contributing to their sustainability. While scholarly attention has focused on the triggers of OCBE, little is known about how and when positive group perception stimulates OCBE in sustainable tourism literature. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this research validated a moderated sequential mediation model of positive group perception and OCBE. Results from both Study 1 (multi-respondent and time-lagged design) and Study 2 (experimental design) unpacked that positive group perception enhanced OCBE through the sequential mediating roles of perceived organizational support and emotional stability. Internal knowledge transfer played a moderating role strengthening the effects of positive group perception on OCBE, perceived organizational support and emotional stability. This study uncovers a novel cognitive pathway linking positive group perception to OCBE, which extends both social cognitive theory and sustainable tourism literature. Practically, the findings highlight the importance for tourism organizations to foster supportive group environments, facilitate internal knowledge transfer, and nurture emotional resilience among employees to promote their voluntary environmental engagement.
