Abstract

Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is a known predictor of entrepreneurial success. Yet grit’s strong goal commitment may clash with the need for openness to disagreement and feedback, leading to the question of whether gritty entrepreneurs are receptive to opposing views. We examine this question using data from a two-wave survey of 153 entrepreneurs in the DACH region, applying structural equation modeling to responses collected over a 13-month time lag. Receptiveness is conceptualized along three dimensions: reduced negative emotions, greater intellectual curiosity, and lower derogation of opponents. Our findings show that grit is positively associated with all three, suggesting that gritty entrepreneurs are not necessarily rigid. Instead, they appear capable of engaging with dissent while staying focused on their goals. These results challenge the assumption that grit undermines flexibility, highlighting instead a form of adaptive persistence. Gritty entrepreneurs may disagree, thoughtfully, without being dismissive.
