Abstract

Blockchain is gaining increasing attention because of its substantial potential applications in supply chain management (SCM). Despite this growing attention, blockchain adoption is still relatively low. To address this issue, the present study examines the motivations and impediments of blockchain adoption in the supply chain (SC) using a triangulation method that consists of an extensive literature review, a survey and a series of in-depth interviews. The findings are encouraging, indicating that the perceived motivations for adopting blockchain globally outweigh the perceived impediments. However, the results also reveal a limited awareness among firms about the broad range of potential benefits from using blockchain. Consequently, spreading knowledge about diverse use cases and advantages of blockchain, such as improving SC sustainability and reducing costs and lead times, may accelerate adoption. Moreover, the study identifies critical impediments that need to be resolved to accelerate adoption, including insufficient technical skills required for implementing the technology and challenges in integrating blockchain with the firm’s IT systems and operational processes. Finally, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) demonstrates that the numerous adoption motivations and impediments can be represented using a more manageable number of dimensions, thereby establishing a basis for valid measurement constructs.
