Abstract

Alternative food systems (AFSs) encompassing diverse initiatives, networks, and practices that seek to reconfigure food system relationships and operations have received heightened academic attention in the last decades. However, research in the Global South (GS) is more recent, and a systematic synthesis of their functioning, potentials, and limitations is still lacking. Following JBI methodology, this scoping review addresses this gap by mapping and analyzing peer-reviewed literature on AFSs in diverse GS contexts, identifying patterns in the literature and characterizing the dimensions and initiatives examined. The review included empirical and conceptual peer-reviewed studies that described and analyzed key characteristics of AFSs rather than isolated dimensions. Selected sources were identified through a systematic search in Scopus and Web of Science, limited to publications in English, Portuguese, and Spanish from the past decade. A total of 153 sources were initially identified and descriptively analyzed. Of these, 112 documents were thematically analyzed, with the majority focused on China, Brazil, and Mexico. Four main thematic categories were identified - agroecologies, connectivities, engagement & organization, and food qualities - together with cross-cutting categories of alternativeness, hybridization, and scalability. This review contributes to more inclusive and situated knowledge development on AFSs. It also identifies key gaps for future research in the GS, including limited engagement with gender and intersectional (in)justice and the limited attention to other elements of food systems beyond production and consumption. • Alternative Food System-AFS items in the Global South rose fivefold over the past decade. • More than half of reviewed works (54.2%) centered on China, Brazil, and Mexico. • Fourteen AFS types were identified, farmers' markets being the leading model. • From the thematic analysis, four simple categories and three cross-cutting categories emerged. • Key gender gaps and intersectional injustices receive limited attention in GS articles.
