While the use of social media can be beneficial; its dark side, particularly in spreading misinformation, is a growing concern. As misinformation is becoming omnipresent on social media during a crisis, studies on understanding how and why misinformation diffuses on social media have also recently risen across multiple disciplines. However, existing scholarships have neither conceptualised in clarity all the determinants that may trigger the spread of misinformation, nor has it investigated how people process the misinformation they receive on social media and share it. This paper presents a systematic review and synthesis of sixty-four studies of misinformation-sharing behaviour on social media, conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. This paper employs the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) framework as an organising structure to systematically integrate communication, psychological, and technological theoretical insights and capture the complex interplay between content-related and context-related stimuli with the psychological state of individuals for understanding misinformation sharing behaviour in a social media setting. Nevertheless, we articulate six propositions that serve as a roadmap for empirical studies investigating the relationships between stimuli, organism, moderator and misinformation sharing behavioural response. This study also provides practical insights and actionable recommendations for addressing misinformation and identifies several opportunities for future research.
