Engagement for sustainability transformation: Generating collective engagement for institutional change through synchronization

Activating and aligning engagement for sustainability transformation is elemental in today's era to mitigate the effects of climate change. To facilitate such engagement, our study explores how actors' engagement can be synchronized to generate collective engagement for institutional change in the context of sustainability transformation. Building upon the actor engagement concept, we draw on an abductive approach and a case study reflecting an Australian initiative aimed at transforming the Australian food system to halve food waste by 2030. The study identifies four mechanisms of synchronization, outlines different activities that encourage the synchronization processes, and highlights specific actor groups that participate in these activities. Thus, it contributes to the actor engagement literature, expanding knowledge on how engagement can be aligned to allow collective engagement for institutional change to emerge. In practice, the insights can be applied to activate and align engagement to manage sustainability-driven changes.
