Abstract

The adoption of Food Redistribution Technology (FRT) plays a critical role in addressing the challenges of food security and waste prevention, particularly in the fruit and vegetable (FV) sector, which is characterized by high perishability of products and complex supply chain dynamics. FRT refers to organizational innovations that use information and communication technologies to connect stakeholders, developing business models that enhance redistribution activities and improve food system sustainability. This study employs duration analysis to identify the factors influencing the adoption of a FRT platform by Producer Organizations (POs) in Italy from 2012 to 2022. This method explores both endogenous and exogenous variables affecting the adoption process. The key drivers and barriers to FRT adoption identified provide insights into the adoption dynamic, considering managerial and entrepreneurial characteristics, economic performances, production features and institutional factors. The findings shows that that the innovative development of FRT is driven by the collaborative efforts between POs, public institutions, and non-governmental organizations, which jointly contribute to the design, implementation, and diffusion of these technologies. The results suggest that financial performance, infrastructure, and institutional influence the adoption process and can guide policymakers in promoting FRT diffusion in other countries. This research highlights the importance of supportive regulatory frameworks, technological development, and collaborative networks in fostering sustainable growth of the FV sector, which in turn provide a positive social impact by improving resource management and access to fresh FV product to vulnerable populations.
