Abstract

This study examines the factors driving cross-border commuting from the Czech Republic to Bavaria using quantitative and qualitative methods. Beyond wage differences, monetary incentives include social benefits such as child allowances, while non-monetary factors such as work conditions also matter. Results highlight the role of disposable income, while incentives overall emerge across multiple levels: company policies, national welfare systems and European Union border regulations. For example, higher German child benefits strongly encourage commuting. These dynamics not only shape mobility but also influence the resilience of border regions by affecting the long-term development of labour mobility motivations.
