The quiet rewrite: How companies reframe values under pressure
研究了企业如何在外部压力下调整价值观表述方式,提出“静默改写”概念,即通过改变语气、可见度和框架来调整承诺表达,而不一定改变实际行动。
Organizations today are under growing pressure to openly express their stance on values such as diversity and sustainability, while also managing the risks associated with such visibility. In practice, many organizations neither fully maintain nor abandon these commitments but instead adjust how they express them. This article examines this pattern, termed “quiet rewrite,” defined as shifts in tone, visibility, and framing that alter how commitments are communicated without necessarily changing underlying actions. Based on structured comparisons of organizational disclosures across 2023 and 2025, we identify three recurring forms of adjustment and introduce a two-layer model distinguishing expression from implementation. This distinction explains how organizations appear both stable and changing, offering managers ways to diagnose evolving commitments and manage consistency–adaptation tensions effectively.
