Personal Revelations and Their Aftershocks: Categorizing Epiphanies and Exploring Their Psychological Transformations
通过分析400多份经理和200多份员工的顿悟报告,归纳出八类顿悟,每类带来独特的动机转变,且这些转变持久存在,为管理者支持员工个人成长提供框架。
While the pursuit of self-understanding is often a lifelong project, in some cases, people attain a heightened understanding of themselves quite suddenly through epiphanies—sudden, personally transformational realizations. To advance our understanding of this phenomenon, we conducted this research with the goal of constructing a typology of epiphanies and exploring what psychological transformations each type of epiphany imparts. Through collecting and analyzing over 400 reports of epiphanies from a sample of 188 managers, we inductively derived an eight-category typology of epiphanies (Study 1). We discovered that each type of epiphany is associated with a unique motivation-related transformation. Next, we collected and analyzed over 200 reports of epiphanies from a sample of 232 workers to examine the extent to which the psychological transformations associated with each type of epiphany endure over time as well as the practices and processes that account for this endurance (Study 2). These studies deepen our understanding of epiphanies and how they connect to people’s work and careers while also revealing that the transformations associated with epiphanies are remarkably enduring. Furthermore, our research provides managers with a framework for navigating epiphanies experienced by members of their organizations to help support their personal growth.
