Performance persistence: The role of fit between entry mode and linguistic and religious distance
研究了跨国公司的进入模式与语言和宗教环境的匹配如何影响绩效持续性,发现匹配带来持续优势,不匹配导致持续劣势。
We examine how a (mis)alignment of the Multinational Enterprise's (MNE's) entry-mode with its linguistic and religious environment influences performance persistence. We propose that MNEs benefit from the efficiencies of wholly-owned subsidiaries in environmentally proximate contexts and the knowledge and flexibility of joint-ventures in distant contexts along linguistic and religious dimensions. Because both the firm's strategy, in terms of entry mode, and the environment, in terms of linguistic and religious distance, are stable, the (dis)advantage of their (mis)alignment is enduring and likely leads to persistent inferior or superior performance. Our examination of 6809 subsidiary-year observations found that the fit between entry mode and both linguistic and religious distance contributed to superior performance persistence, and the misfit with religious distance led to persistent inferior performance.
