How Does Digital Platform Use Strengthen Organizational Resilience? The Role of Business Model Innovation and Entrepreneurial Orientation

While digital platform use is acknowledged to hold potential for boosting organizational resilience, the intrinsic mechanisms and contextual conditions shaping this relationship remain poorly understood. Drawing on organizational learning theory, this study investigates how digital platform use shapes organizational resilience, analyzing the mediating role of business model innovation (BMI) as well as the moderating effect of entrepreneurial orientation. Paired survey data from 178 agricultural firms is analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling and hierarchical ordinary least squares regression analysis. Results demonstrate that digital platform use significantly enhances BMI, which subsequently fosters proactive resilience and reactive resilience. BMI acts as a full mediator in the association of digital platform use with both proactive resilience and reactive resilience. While entrepreneurial orientation fails to moderate the association of BMI with reactive resilience, it significantly reinforces the association of BMI with proactive resilience, thus amplifying the mediating role of BMI in the link between digital platform use and proactive resilience. This study advances existing literature by providing theoretical elaborations and empirical validation on how digital platform use enables organizational resilience, and provides implications for enterprises to use digital platforms for the sake of developing organizational resilience.
