Abstract

ABSTRACT Digital platform firms play a central role in circular economy ( CE ) ecosystems by facilitating resource recirculation and ecosystem coordination. However, existing intellectual capital frameworks do not adequately capture the intangible resources required in digital‐driven circular ecosystems. This study develops and empirically validates a revised intellectual capital framework tailored to digital platform firms operating in CE ecosystems. Adopting a mixed‐methods design, the research proceeds in two phases. First, a qualitative study using the Gioia methodology conceptualizes revised dimensions of human, structural, and relational capital. Second, a quantitative study using survey data tests the proposed framework and examines its relationship with circular economy performance (CEP). The study adopts a synthesis approach to conceptualize the fusion of intellectual capital theory and the dynamic capability view into an integrated framework. The study analyzes intellectual capital through fresh, innovative lenses, explaining how intangible resources enable platform firms to orchestrate circular resource flows and enhance CEP. The findings show that human, structural, and relational capital require reconceptualization in circular digital platform contexts. The study further demonstrates that dynamic capabilities for circularity adoption plays a key role the relationship between intellectual capital and circular economy performance (CEP). In addition, temporal intelligence strengthens the Dynamic Capabilities for Circularity Adoption (DCCA) and CEP relationship, while affective capital strengthens the relationship between relational capital and DCCA. The findings offer theoretical and managerial insights, including a structured set of managerial levers, targeted interventions, and a phased implementation roadmap derived from empirical findings.
