Abstract

Abstract The article presents information about the Federal Reserve System in the U.S. The author spent four months as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis during the summer of 1994. The Federal Reserve System is made up of 12 Federal Reserve Banks and the Board of Governors. The Federal Reserve has sole regulatory authority over the bank holding companies and also supervises state chartered member banks. The Board of Governors has the ultimate policy- and decision-making authority; however, most of the supervisory work is carried out at the Reserve Banks. An important responsibility of the Federal Reserve System is conducting monetary policy. Each Reserve Bank and the Board of Governors has a research department of economists to study issues that are important in determining banking and monetary policy. The research departments produce a variety of publications designed to provide information useful in banking and other business decisions, and in setting policy. These publications are designed to be informative to a broad group including bank managers, bank regulators and even academics.
