Abstract This article focuses on PHINet which is Prentice-Hall's computerized tax news and research service and is accessed from a personal computer via a telecommunications network. Once one has accessed PHINet, three basic functions can be performed, namely, news gathering, research and document retrieval. PHINet is available to educational institutions at a mere reasonable price than previously, as of September 1988. The current price is $150 per month for a minimum of nine months out of a 12-month period. PHINet can be accessed through additional computers using other communication software. Still, one subscription means that PHINet can be used by only one user at a time. This could cause problems for students especially if the class is large or if assignments are not made well in advance of the due date. Copying documents from the PHINet system is possible, but it is not quick. Capturing lengthy documents takes considerable time although the speed has an effect on how fast one can capture the document. While a direct hook-up of the computer to the printer may take up less total time than capturing and printing, printing would take longer than just capturing.
