Abstract This article focuses on Turbotax computer software. Turbotax is a tax return preparation program designed for use by tax professionals and individual taxpayers. It will prepare up to 30 tax forms related to an individual income tax return. Data entry is accomplished much as one would fill out a tax return. The appropriate form is called up and the income or expense figures are entered in the appropriate boxes. Turbotax is very easy to use and is reasonably well documented. Generally the program's 188-page reference manual does a more than adequate job of explaining the various options and how to use them, although it is unclear in some places. However, a user does not need to read the entire manual to become a proficient user. The operation of Turbotax is extremely simple. The program is entered with two commands. While Turbotax is basically a return preparation program, it can be used to address "what if" or planning questions. At any time during data input the user can call up a tax window which gives a brief summary of the taxpayer's return based on the information currently entered.
