Abstract

Abstract The article discusses the actions taken by professional engineer Roger M. Boisjoly concerning his involvement in the explosion of the American space shuttle "Challenger" in January 1986. The painful memory of Challenger is vividly recreated in the article entitled "Personal Integrity and Accountability," by Boisjoly. Boisjoly was one of the few engineers, then employed by Morton Thiokol Corp., who was "in the loop" in generating an engineering recommendation on whether to launch Challenger. Morton Thiokol manufactured the O-rings for the spacecraft. The story Boisjoly relates is riveting. Boisjoly uses his experiences to discuss his recommendations to employees and those that employ them as to: responsibility, authority, and accountability. In short, he discusses the alternatives an employee faces when "bad news" is discovered. Boisjoly believes there is only one acceptable solution and that is facing and relaying the news, good or bad. Boisjoly has been admired for the actions taken by him throughout his career, but especially with regard to Challenger.
