Abstract

The aim of the present research was todetermine the relationship of self-esteem and selfefficacyto mathematical anxiety in students. This is acorrelation study. The population of this study includesall second-grade high school students of Ardabilenrolled in the 2009-2010 academic year. The researchsample consisted of 480 male and female students whowere selected through multistage random sampling. Tocollect data, a mathematics anxiety rating scale, selfesteemscale and self-efficacy scale were used. Theresults of Pearson’s correlation analysis showed thatself-esteem and self-efficacy are positively associatedwith mathematical anxiety in students (p<0/001).Multiple regression analysis showed cognitive selfesteem,academic self-efficacy and emotional selfefficacyto be the best predictors mathematical anxietyin students. Findings also revealed a significantdifference between the mathematics anxiety of maleand female students (p<0/01). Significant differenceswere also noted in the mathematical anxiety of studentsmajoring in humanities and those majoring in science ormathematics (p<0/001).
