Abstract

A brief evaluation is presented of a Ride Service Programme (RSP) in Wichita, Kansas where free taxi rides were provided from Thanksgiving to January 2nd 1989-90. Information obtained from company vouchers showed that the scheme, called Taxi-12, carried 123 riders. Characteristics of the passengers using the service were recorded by the drivers based on observation. Despite a low rate of return it was possible to establish that most passengers were male, in their 20s and 30s and owned cars. Passengers were from a variety of occupational and socio-economic groups and from a variety of bars. The data suggest that the RSP is reaching its target audience but, in a population of 400,000 people, is under-utilised.
