During the last decade, researchers have been exploring the economic implications of the so-called energy crisis. Few of these studies have gone below the macroeconomy to the industry level, and almost all of them have concentrated on the supply side.1 In many industries, however, fuel prices may be an important variable on the demand side as well, as a substitute or a complement to the goods produced. A good example of such an industry is the lodging industry, which is the subject of this study. Here transportation cost is an important element in the creation of demand.
